Ruins and Other Poems

ruins
“Ruins”

we built something once,
this city of ours.
we planted the fields
and numbered the stars.

we paved our own roads,
and wrote our own maps.
laid this foundation;
then came the collapse.

a downfall depicted
in ancient script.
tragedy that no one
can ever decrypt

remnants of temples
all tied up in vines
you, me and memories
buried beneath time.

our walls crumbled down.
this kingdom of dust
is all that remains,
the ruins of us.

“Cataracts”

i think that you’re beautiful.

but a hopeful heart
and a clouded view
never let me see
all the shades of you.

it will take time
for me to find
and love is blind,
so i hold onto you.

i think that you’re so pretty.

but a tender touch
and a heavy glare
never let me learn
what’s all under there.

it will take time
for me to find
and love is blind;
but i hold onto you.

i thought we would be happy.

but my desperate drive
and an opaque eye
never let me look
through to the inside.

and it took time
for me to find
that love is blind
but now i know the truth.

my head takes hold
where my sight lacks
now i see through
these cataracts.

and i’m not holding onto you.

“Forecast”

the things we should say,
better left unsaid
so we talk about
the weather instead

discussing the time
of the setting sun
never speak of clouds
on the horizon

the air gets heavy
with scent of a storm
darkness looms over,
shadows start to form

i long for sunshine
to soak up this pain
but nod when you say
we can use the rain.

“Infidelity”

i know all about her.

you wear her like a sleeve.
it’s written on your skin
how much you love her,
why you want to leave.

she smells like salt water
and coconut rum
she melts like a snow cone
on the tip of your tongue

you sink inside her ocean waves,
take cover in her coastline caves

her hair is the color
of malibu sand
her skin is silicon
and summertime tan

you breathe in her pacific breeze,
and seek shade beneath her palm trees

i know all about her.

she left her mark on you.
you just can’t cover
infidelity
like a bad tattoo.
